2 GB of VRAM - Plenty or Enough?

Hey Guys!

With a GTX 770 2 vs 4 GB comparison test, I noticed the 2 GB held equal in higher resolutions to the 4 GB. I've been hearing, however, that 2 GB is ENOUGH VRAM for 1080p. I'd like the card to run games playable for a good 5 + years, and might SLI later. I'm not that interested in 4k, but 1600p might be nice. I just noticed in the test (http://alienbabeltech.com/main/gtx-770-4gb-vs-2gb-teste...) there was no difference in the cards.

I'm lost...

Thanks guys!

Unfortunately, its impossible to predict the future. They may make games that rely heavily on vram (since xboxone and ps4 supposedly have massive amounts of vram.)

I would personally get the 4gb, since your already spending so much, and it provides peace of mind, knowing that even if they do some crazy thing with vram, you will still have enough.

Also, that benchmark may be true for current gen games, but it may not be for next gen games.

A slight correction. The new consoles have massive amounts of shared system ram. Since both the CPU and GPU will be sharing it, the amount used for the GPU may not change much at all.

What exactly do you mean when you say this? Is it that in consoles, the GPU and CPU use the same ram? And the GPU has no VRAM?

And if so, what would that mean? That 2 GB and 4 GB of VRAM don't really matter because it shares with the RAM?

Yes, that is what I'm saying. It uses the ram the same way as PC APU's do (the new consoles have APU's in them, not a separate GPU and CPU). What it means is we have no idea how much vram is going to be needed on future PC's and that it will not be anywhere near the 8GB of vram mentioned because the CPU part of the chip still needs a lot of ram.

I was thinking about SLIing down the road with the 4 GB to get awesome performance. If I got a card with a good cooler, GPU boost 2.0 could push higher clocks. What model would you recommend?

I currently Crossfire with 1GB of RAM at 1080p and have no issues with my old HD 4780s. I picked up two HD 7870s and took the 2GB versions. I believe that 2GB will be more than enough until you're ready to upgrade again. Remember that buying too much too soon is almost always a waste.
