So I'm thinking 7950 or 7970 if I can squeeze a bit more £ into it, but which one do I go for and which version gigabyte, msi etc.

The Gigabyte WindForce cards and MSI's TwinFrozr cards are both very good varieties of 7950 and 7970.

I heard this card was really bad at over heating because of it having only 1 fan :(

I wouldn't really be concerned so much about heat on this card. Typical GPUs can reach temps of 80C normally. The fan will also increase its speed automatically if the card reaches a certain temperature.

It will run cooler if you have a couple of decent case fans, too.

Oh I see, so this is a card you would recommend because of it's price?

Absolutely. It is a great performing card, and at a great price in this instance.
