I've Windows 7 running on a Compaq laptop. When it starts up it goes through the usual sequence but as it's about to load from the welcome message to the desktop the screen turns black. The only thing visible is the mouse cursor. The mouse cursor is responsive but has no icons to click. The only way out of this is to shut down by holding the on/off button.
Starting on SAFE mode everything works in its limited way. Presumably a program, maybe a virus, is kicking in during start up. How can I access the start up folder from SAFE mode to switch things off.

You can still access the Startup folder in safe mode in the usual way (Start Button > All Programs > Startup) but that's not going to help anyway because everything that starts with Windows is not necessarily loaded from the Startup folder. Most startup items are loaded from instructions in the registry.

When Safe Mode works (in it's own peculiar way) but Nomal Mode doesn't, it's trypically caused by a bad third-party driver (or an application that installs drivers such as antivirus or third-party firewall or a cd burning app) that you've recently installed, it's not usually caused by a virus infection.

You need to think about what driver or application you've recently installed just before the problem started, then uninstall the offending driver or application in Safe Mode. Having done that, Windows should start normally.
