I'm really in the market for some new hard drives.

I've already heard around that I should go with WD over Seagate.

But what are the differences between.

WD Blue, WD Black, and WD Red?

I know they are "standard uses", "performance use", and then "NAS use".

I've heard WD Blue's are pretty well known, and the WD Black's are really old technology. Haven't heard much from using Red's in desktops though.

But in real world situation, since they are all pretty much the same price in a difference of $10, which one can I have the fastest speeds and most reliability with?

Solution
Green series - 54xx rpm drives ( spins something above 5400 rpms.) Storage drives. Many have used them succesfully in Nas's (including me) and were out long before the Red series.

Red - 54xx rpms drive for when you dont need performance drives. These are good for storage and Nas drives

Blue -7200 rpm performance drive. The platter density varies but the newer ones are using 1TB platters which have not migrated to the black series yet. Typically come with a 2 or 3 yr warranty.

Blacks - 7200 rpm performance drive. People claim these are made with enterprise grade parts for great durability and WD backs these drives with 5yr warranties but these are slower than Seagates current 1tb/platter drives

Velociraptors - 10rpm performace...

Velociraptors - 10rpm performace drives. These are 2.5" drives in a 3.5" cooling housing. These drives offer great random read/write performance over the other drives above and come with a 5 yr warranty.

RE series - These are WD's 7200 rpm entry level enterprise class hard drives and come with a 5yr warranty.

So is the Blue my best bet here? Or should I go with a Seagate?
