My pc configuration:
processor - core 2 duo e7300
motherboard - dg35ec
vga - gtx 560 ti
os - win 7

I could play games like cod mw3 and dmc devil may cry at smooth speeds.... recently i noticed that everything has slowed down, and task manager shows only one cpu, where it earlier showed 2 cpus.... and now its slowing down to the point that it takes about 20 minutes to come to the start screen.... Do I have to replace the cpu, or is there any way to recover the pc.

UPDATE: Apparently I had left the core multiplexing technology disabled in my motherboard, so enabling it made it work back again. Thanks to everyone who struggled to answer my post.

What has changed?

Could you possibly have a loose cpu cooler?
The high heat may cause the cpu to downclock to protect itself.
I don't know that it would shut off one thread.

Could you have contracted a virus or malware?

Perhaps you could try system restore and go back to a point when things were working well.

Well, I tried a system restore point, but it didn't work.

Earlier, I checked the following link : http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/howto-get-windows-7-to-detect-your-new-multi-core/71519d51-f6cb-47df-b3ff-66c2928d6de4

it says sisoft sandra detects correct amount of cores, while cpuid does not until finishing whatever is to be done, but for me, sisoft sandra also shows only one core.

Additionally, I noted that the cpu is struggling to run (task manager displays it running at 100%)
