Hi guys, thank you first of all. Right I am running a i7 2700k (oc'ed to 4.6, but I have not touched the voltage) on a asus v gene board with 8 gb of ram. It is cooled with a nh-d14 fan and the case has another 3 fans in it.

However, my issue is that under just normal use (ie a word doc say) my cpu will be at around 40c, then during some photo editing it can rise to over 80c! But then (it gets better) during gaming, splinter cell blacklist to be exact it reached the crazy heights of 94c!!!

So my question is whats wrong and what can I do about it? Is my cpu stuffed? I checked and the fan seems to be fitted ok with a good connect. I put fresh thermal paste on only yesterday so I know its not that.

Thank you once again for your help.

Re-read your original post and if I understand correctly you haven't changed the voltages in your OC. That leads me to ask did you use the boards auto tuning to OC to 4.6? Just trying to get the picture right.

It helps explain the high temps and no need to apologize. There are countless tutorials to overclock effectively and safely and they are way better than the auto OC on the Asus board. They are well worth a read and re-read until the stuff starts to make sense along side some experimentation. The best way to proceed is to begin with under volt'ing which lets you know what your specify gear will do, and from there you'll possibly get both higher clocks more efficiently and safely then using the auto OC features.

TTL @ OC3D did a guide well worth the read... all the fundamentals and you can build on that. The key is patience the pay off is you'll get great performance and not run your rig into the ground before it's time.
As I mentioned I have much the same as you and I idle under 1v and full load stress test OCCT 4.8 under 1.45v... not necessarily what you'll get as you could do better the same or under... silicone lottery. What is certain is currently at the temps you stated above = way to hot
