basically I have 60meg virgin broadband and can hit 60meg easily wired but to get those speeds wirelessly i have to change the superhub to 300mbps which is bad for the range.

in one of the upstairs bedrooms where my desktop and laptop is (other side of the house) the laptop gets a good 45 meg on the wireless but the desktop has a belkin usb wireless stick which only gets around 20 which is terrible.

so i was thinking about upgrading its connection, should i get a better PCI-E wireless card to replace the usb stick, such as the TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 N900.

or get some homeplugs such as the TP-Link TL-PA511KIT 500 Mbps Gigabit Powerline Adapter or the TP-Link PA411KIT AV500 500 Mbps Powerline Adapter.

Try a cheap USB extension cable first and see if you can place the USB stick in a area of stronger signal in the room. Just because it is PCI-e means nothing as to if it will work better than USB or not. There is always the chance the card is defective or has a driver issue but in general you will not see much difference in performance between wireless devices.

The powerline things if they work in your house generally provide a more consistent connection. You will get nowhere near 500m you will be lucky to even get close to 100m. Most times you see 50-75m.

It depends a lot on how you USE it.

If you only need the INTERNET and your local network exceeds this, then a faster wi-fi connection won't matter.

So you only need an expensive solution for transferring files between local devices.

*If you DO require a faster connection, then the decision is up to you. You can easily investigate the performance numbers and only you can decide if that's worth it to you.

(I'm also not sure why increasing the performance would LOWER your range. In general, range and signal power increase together. If you've increased the performance by changing to 300Mbps the range should be extended as well.)
