I dropped my western digital hard drive when i plugged it it in to my laptop it turns on and works but it doesn't show up in my hard disk and drives, i checked in disk management and it says the drive is unallocated and when i try to change anything it says the media write protection is there any way i can get the stuff off this hard drive without formatting and is there any fix?

Dude you dropped it... probably caused mechanical failure in the process.
If you really need the files send it out to a reputable recovery place, one that is able to rebuild drives if it comes to that (they will need a clean room to do that). Bring your wallet because its not cheap.

If you cant afford that or the files aren't that important, you can take the cover off yourself and see if the heads are stuck or jammed and cant move. If you do free it up be ready to recovery what you can. Theres not tellinng if the drive will work or for how long and you may only get one chance at it.

In the future, remember that important files always need to be stored in more than 1 location/device.
