I'm a bit confused with compatibility between motherboards and CPUs, even after some reading up online I'm getting nowhere, so as it says in the title just wondering if these 2 items will work together:

Asus Maximus VI Formula S1150 Intel Z87 DDR3 ATX
Intel Core i7-4930K S2011 3.40GHz 12MB 6-Core Processor

thank you!

That motherboard has socket LGA 1150 (Socket for Haswells) while the 4930K is made for socket LGA 2011 (They are incompatible). You will need a motherboard that has Socket 2011 to be used with that Ivy-E processor.

If you have the 4930K then yes that motherboard will work fine. It is designed for the IB-E CPU.
