Hey, my Acer V3-551G, with AMD Radeon HD Graphics 7660G+7670M (or something along those lines), 8GB RAM, 1GB VRAM and A10 processor overheats in about 15-20 mins while playing Skyrim, and like 45-70 while playing Battlefield 3. The entire computer shuts down and cant be rebooted for about 5 minutes... This is worrying as I REALLY don't want to fry a £500 laptop. Any ideas as to why this is happening and how to prevent it?

If you have been using the laptop in bed or holding it on your knees a lot the cooling fans will quickly pick up dust and become useless for cooling. Make sure the fans are clean. Consider putting the laptop on a laptop cooling pad which has a built in fan to assist the laptops fans in keeping the system cool.

I was using it on a carpet, but I realized this was bad so I took a plastic lid with raised edges (It's quite big, the same size as the laptop) and rested the laptop on the edges, to give it more space but this doesn't seem to be helping...

I would imagine that your laptop is already rotten with carpet fibre and dust. It needs a good clean out and a laptop cooling pad to prevent mishaps in the future. Dont put the laptop on carpet no matter what it is resting on. The dust at floor level will be sucked straight in and park itself right in your cooling fans.
