Hello everyone,

I have had this PC since October 2011 and only just started getting this problem.

Recently my CPU temps have been shooting up to 90°c+ even when running idle. It isn't all the time it's just sometimes.

I thought it might be the CPU paste so I cleaned the old stuff off with isopropyl alcohol 99% and replaced it with some Arctic Silver 5. Unfortunately this didn't solve the problem.

I have it running idly now and the temperatures are staying at around 25°c - 31°c but it will still shoot up randomly to 90°c.

Anyone have any ideas?

All help is much appreciated.

Thanks

- Tom.

AS5 takes over 200 hours of "thermal cycling" .... (that's 5 minutes warming up and 5 minutes cooling down to create a cycle.... so it takes a while (as much as a year) to fully cure.

http://www.arcticsilver.com/as5.htm

Due to the unique shape and sizes of the particles in Arctic Silver 5's conductive matrix, it will take a up to 200 hours and several thermal cycles to achieve maximum particle to particle thermal conduction and for the heatsink to CPU interface to reach maximum conductivity. (This period will be longer in a system without a fan on the heatsink or with a low speed fan on the heatsink.) On systems measuring actual internal core temperatures via the CPU's internal diode, the measured temperature will often drop 2C to 5C over this "break-in" period. This break-in will occur during the normal use of the computer as long as the computer is turned off from time to time and the interface is allowed to cool to room temperature. Once the break-in is complete, the computer can be left on if desired.

For future reference, Shin Etsu has the exact same thermal properties as AS5 but no curing issues.

Still, I don;t think that is your problem.... Id suggest running OCCT and tracking tamps and voltages.

Thanks for the reply.

I downloaded OCCT but I am unsure how to test. Could you point me in the right direction?

EDIT: Just tried some tests myself, they didn't last long at all. The CPU started overheating pretty much not even 1 minute into the test.
