Could I get windows 8 by doing this?

Let's say I have a upgrade version of windows 8 but I just built a computer without an operating system on it yet. And you can't upgrade to windows 8 without a previous OS. But what if I have a Windows XP disk? Could I put XP on a new computer and then use the Windows 8 upgrade disk and upgrade it to Windows 8?

Would it work without any issues?

I think it needs to be windows vista or higher to use teh windows 8 upgrade, I could be wrong though.

The Win8 upgrade cannot "upgrade" XP but XP does qualify for previous install detection purposes. Once XP is detected, you will have options to either install a fresh Win8 elsewhere or overwrite your XP partition.

It can be xp, you just can't keep any files like you can with vista or 7 which isn't an issue anyways. As long as you have a valid xp key to use on that pc, you don't even need to install xp.

You are correct, you do not even have to activate XP, just install the Win-8 upgrade on top of it.Just overwrite when prompted.

Upgrade media can be used on blank hdds. The important part to be legal is that you must own a valid prior windows os eligible for an upgrade for that pc. It doesn't actually have to be installed.

So as long as I have a Activation code I should be able to use a upgrade version of Windows 8 disc.

Also if it says 32/64- bit on it, does that mean if the previous OS on it is 32-bit that I can only use 32-bit? Or will I be given the option for 32 or 64 bit when I put the Win8 disc in?

There will be 2 discs, 32 bit and 64 bit. You can use either.
