Opening external HDD for inspection in laminar flow hood?

Hi guys. Pretty common story, external USB hard drive dropped and isn't recognised anymore. If you think interpreting the symptoms may help, please please take a look below. I'm grasping at straws here.

However my question is: Would you believe it viable to disassemble the HDD casing beneath a laminar flow hood and inspect the platter for damage, or connect it to a PC and observe any obviously bad head behaviour? These hoods are used for sterile work in biomedical research, so dust should not really be a problem. Just wondering if anyone has experience in this matter. I'm fairly good at repairing all kinds of stuff but this would be a first timer.

-I actually used a stethoscope to listen to the sounds it makes, the disk spins up and continues to do so without any clicking.
-Windows recognises a device being plugged in (the characteristic sound plays) however no drive is displayed. WD utilities does not recognise it either.
-The Led flashes continuously.
- It was dropped by a colleque and I was informed only AFTER it failed 2 days later, so I fear it succumbed to damage induced after the head got misaligned or something similar. Would I be able to ascertain any such physical damage by simply inspecting the platter?

Thank you so much for any input, I'm close to a nervous breakdown.
