I'm in the market for a new router because my router right now kinds sucks. My download speeds are 5mbps/1mbps upload. Also i'm very new with networking and this kind of stuff so don't expect me to know all this stuff. I also have another question, is it unusual that i have ethernet jacks in every room of my house? Or am i confusing them for something else?

How much speed did you buy from ATT. You should be able to get the full rated speed even on wireless. You want to test directly connected to the router with a cable to start. If it does not test at fairly close to what you purchased the you need to contact them. So if you paid for 5m down and 1m up then all is working fine. If you paid for 20m down and 5m up and are only getting 5m down and 1m up then they need to come out and test as to why. They will likely bring another modem/router to test. The may be able to test from the central office and see if there are errors.

I have yet to see a router that cannot run at full speed on wired. Most wireless is good enough to surf. People that want really fast wireless are...
Almost every new house built has ethernet installed in most rooms. It could be telephone lines and depending on what kind of wire was used and how it is run it could be used for data.

If your ISP is limiting you to 5m down 1m up then a new router will not help a lot. Even very old routers can do many many times that. If your problem was you paid for say 50m and were only getting 5m then a newer router may help but even that depends on lots of things.

Thanks so much, do you have any suggestions? My ISP is ATT U Verse, and right now i think the router is combined with the modem in one thing. You would think i get better speeds. But this is over my laptop wifi, does that have a significant effect on speeds?

Laptops generally have better wifi that a desktop machine. There are antenna built into the back of the screen which tends to be better than in back of a metal case.
