What exactly IS ram?

OK. So i think that RAM is random acsess memory. IS that right? Also if all my RAM slots are full, and i want a ram upgrade, If i replace a ram stick, will i lose anything? like games? also if i have more gigabytes of ram, does that mean that my computer will run faster? what exactly is stored on ram?

Yes RAM is Random Access Memory, it's only active when the system is on and is where actions take place and is used as a conduit from the CPU to the GPU (as an example), nothing permanent is stored in it. As far as having more DRAM it may or may not speed the system up - generally it will, but for many once you hit 6 or 8GB of DRAM that's all that many people need, beyond that it depends on the system, the user and what they do
