Everything was fine until I lost my laptop to a hard drive crash. Brought out the emachine desktop.

I now can't get my DVD burner or the CD burner to read or write. I have tried the driver updates and it still doesn't work. I even tried a different DVD burner and it will not read or burn.

Anyone have a clue?

Thanks!

You could try this registry edit:
"This problem may be caused by two Windows registry entries that have become corrupted. To use Registry Editor to delete the corrupted Registry entries, follow these steps:
1.Press the Windows logo key+R to open the Run dialog box.
2.Type regedit in the Run dialog box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow
3.In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

4.In the right pane, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry...

ok. I tried all avenues. When I got to the syem restore portion the restore point I had to find IS NOT THERE. Now. IS there a manual way to go into the registry and either 1. Make a brick out of this machine or could I install another burner or what would someone smarter than me do??

5.On the Edit menu, click Delete.
6.When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
7.In the right pane, click LowerFilters.

Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, go to Method 4.
8.On the Edit menu, click Delete.
9.When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
10.Exit Registry Editor.
11.Restart the computer."

I see this method was already suggested by Phillip Corcoran, have you tried it yet?
