hello.

just fyi.. the location is a large two floor building..
lots of rooms.. some commercial space rooms..
admin.. counter.. etc..

i have ONE - 16port gigabit switch
TWO - 8 port switch (X and Y)
ONE - 4 port wifi router
ONE - internet router

four to six computer in a room..

i need help in properly networking these switches. and custom ip, gateway the computers..

so the 16 port gigabit switch will be the main switch..
internet router connects to it.. (crossover? straight?)

then the wifi router connects to the 16 port..

then probably 2 computer connects to the wifi router

then the 8 port switch ( X and Y) connects to the 16 port..

5 computers connects to the 16 port..

4 computers connects to X

5 computers connects to Y

..

questions...

is this network layout safe?..
i didnt want to use very long cables since the rooms that needed the network are too far from each other..

how in a way should i change the
ip address
subnet mask
default gateway

of the computers in each room..

do i have to subnet?..

Solution
crossover cable between same layer devices (switch to switch - router to router)

straight cable between different layer devices (switch to router)

As for how many clients connected to each switch will largely depend on the infrastructure, so that's up to you.

It will be physically safe if you do it right (having all cables going through cable ducts, not having them exposed so ppl can accidentally / intentionally damage).

Since you have unmanaged switches you can't create VLANs, therefore you will only have one net, so they all will have the same subnet mask, the same default gateway being all of them inside the same net (which to use i.e. 192.168.x.x 10.0.0.x 172.16.x.x it's up to you as well).

If you stuff is netgear and you have a netgear router and a netgear unmanaged switch. You just plug one port of the unmanaged switch into your router port. If the router has 1 Wan, and 4 Lan ports, you can plug in each lan port into a unmanaged witch. The unmanaged switch will do the auto uplink and assign the same ip addresses as the ip addresses setup on your router and will be on the same network. You can have most of the stuff assigned dynamically and the static stuff is automatically detected. I know this tech works for giga switches from personal experience.

I think this works on other brands but the terminology changes from manufacturer to manfacturer?
