I wonder if anyone can help.
I live in France but want to watch Brit TV on my TV set via my Humax PVR. To do this I must access the TV channels via a VPN. My ISP in France is free.fr. What I want to know is can I connect an access point into the back of my modem ,set up the access point to go to my VPN to get my brit TV and then simply connect the access point by cable to my Humax box...the Humax box has an ethernet socket...if this is possible I will then be able to view the Brit Channels on the TV. Any recommendations for hardware would be appreciated...sorry if this sound confused...I am !!!

First be very sure what you calling a modem really is that and not a router. A modem will pass vpn through it with no issues a router tends to restrict what type of vpn you can run and some do not work.

In any case you need a router that has the ability to run VPN. Now this is different than a router that has the feature that lets VPN pass though it. That is a common feature one that can actually do vpn is a little harder to find. Another option is to get a router that you can load dd-wrt on, you need one that can support the large image that contains openvpn.

Now after all this you still need something on far end that can provide you with a IP that is in the correct region.

.....so i get this far before I looked that device up.

I figured you were trying to watch tv over the internet that was region restricted. But from what i can tell this DVR is the dumb kind that takes in TV over the antenna and records it. It is not a network enabled devices.

No chance of using this device over the internet. You will need a completely different solution. Either the tv is on the internet and you can watch it with a computer or you are going to have to place a device that can receive the signals over the air and then transmit them to your computer. A lot of people use software called slingbox to do this....BUT you would need a friend who would allow you to place a device in their house that lived where the signals could be received. If anything this DVR could be the device you place in the friends house and access it remotely but I have not read the instructions to see if it would work that way.

Thanks for the info.....you are right my box provided by my ISP is a router....my Humax does does have an ethernet socket on the back and the manual does explain how to network it....but the problem is getting it to network via the VPN....is there some sort of access point I can connect to the router which would be configured to the VPN ...hope that makes sense ....

I do not think the other solutions would be feasible unfortunatley ..

From what I can tell your device cannot receive television over the ethernet port. It can stream something it has recorded or it can play a data file from a number of devices. So you could build a VPN but all you could do is access a file not a TV channel.

I see.....the other option I could have would be to install an HDMI graphics board on my desktop computer running the VPN...access say BBC through iplayer and connect the TV via HDMI cable...does that make sense ?

Yes if the BBC provides a service that lets you watch the TV over the internet . So first we will assume you have a method to watch the feed if you were in the UK and the only issue is they restrict the IP you can watch from. Live TV feeds are still a little rare most just let you watch programs the next day or later.

If you are using a PC then it is a simple matter of finding a VPN provider who has location in the UK and can give you a IP. Many of the larger VPN providers have lists of locations they server. It is all a matter of cost and performance. Most have some form of trial that will let you determine if it is fast enough.

I have the exact same situation as the original question. I think the simplest solution is get a HTPC or similar get a VPN and use HDMI to show on tele. Its a pity because the new Humax has a great easy interface for accessing BBC iPlayer
