New Build Problem

Hi guys,

I have recently built a new computer rig. I tried an external build with the ram and cpu and it worked fine. After connecting everything together, I try to boot it the computer. It comes on for a few seconds (6+ seconds but under 20) then switches off like a loss of power, then switches on again and loops it. During the installation of the CPU cooler, I have accidently scratched the circuits near the CPU. I have tried unplugging most of the addons such as cooler, graphics card and storage and unplug/plug cables but nothing happens.

Is this the motherboards failure, power supply or something else?
What failure does this situation suit?
Any suggestions are appreciated and needed urgently.

Thanks in advance

Sounds to me like a power supply failure...
Install the CPU (with stock cooler), RAM onto the motherboard and turn it on...
If the same happens, it could be overheating/non enough power/damaged motherboard... could be alot of things...

What components do you have?

First check if you have physically damaged any chips or ic s in your motherboard.

doesn't seem to me that you have damaged your main board, or else your machine would not have started at all.but still it is better to be sure.

Secondly, you have to plug in your cpu cooler and ensure that both of them are in proper contact with each other. the processor overheating may cause such a problem. follow this guide for installing the cpu cooler:

revert back if it works or not

I have:

Cpu: i7 4770k
Cooler: Thermaltake 2.0 Extreme water cooler
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z87-D3HP
Ram: G.Skill Trident X (8Gx2) 16GB
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB
SSD: Kingston 120GB
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 760
PSU: Antec High Current 620W Modular

It may be a power supply error but I tried a external boot and the gigabyte boot screen came up so I knew the CPU, ram and PSU are working fine. Though I may not be sure it is 100% working.

Hmm, all nice and reliable components... Im begining to think that those stratches by the CPU socket are short curcuiting the CPU causing it to turn on and off...

Take all the components out, put the motherboard on top of its box, install the CPU, RAM, connect it to your power supply... connect a screen to the on board graphics and try to boot it up.. if it doesnt work, go into your motherboard manual and try to find the CMOS reset jumper... (or take the battery out of the motherboard for 2-3minutes, this will reset the BIOS incase that is the problem, if they is still nothing, you have damaged your motherboard.

I recommend sending it back for a replacement as soon as possible and next time, be very careful with your components.

Good luck!!

Thanks, I luckily had a extra computer to test with, founds out that it was is the motherboard, everything else including the CPU cooler seems to work. Though it can't be my cpu as it wouldn't turn on at all.. I'm gonna buy a new one tommorow and to be careful with it.
