I am trying to connect a DVI-D (male) monitor to my laptop which only has a VGA and a HDMI (females) input. I have read how many people have problems because of the digital vs. analog issue and so forth, so do i need to convert it to the VGA or would converting to the HDMI be better?

so what im asking here is, what should i buy and how much will it roughly cost?

links to websites with exactly what to buy would be helpful =)

Solution

Ah I misunderstood you. :)

Yes a normal HDMI to DVI(any type) will work just fine!
You would need an ACTIVE adapter to convert analog to digital, these adapter are pretty expensive and not worth the cost most of the time.

What are your full specs? What are you trying to do? Maybe we can solve this with more info and without paying 40$ for a useless adapter that are hard to find at the best of times.

If you have an HDMI output on your laptop, you can connect a DVI-D display using only a passive adapter. HDMI is pin compatible with Single-Link DVI-D. If you wish to use the VGA port you must purchase an active adapter.

The laptop has an external HDMI port, why do you not use it?

External Ports
Digital Media Card Reader for Secure Digital and Multimedia cards
2 SuperSpeed USB 3.0
2 Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0
1 HDMI
1 VGA (15-pin)
1 RJ -45 (LAN)
2 Headphone-out
1 Microphone-in
