startup repair, new cpu, motherboard, ram.

I got ASRock 990fx extreme3. 2 stix of 4gb of ram. And 8 core amd 3.5 processor. Along with a new tower. I'm using my old cd drive and hard drive. And a new powersupply. I bought windows 7 but have yet to even be able to boot computer past startup repair. Quite frustrating. Tried doing a restore, but that failed as well. Im tech savy enough to piece this together myself but not to trouble shoot past this point. So right now I have vista still going, and im not tooooo sure what to do.

You need to boot from the DVD drive. Change the boot order in the bios. You are currently booting to the HDD and it is trying to sort it out. It cannot do this. You have to tell it to boot from the DVD drive.

I just tried putting in the windows 7 disc and it still sends me to repair.

Ok awesome! It looks like its working! Thx alot :] ill update if I run into anything else.

So when I choose upgrade it says I have to start windows normally. Well I dont really have that option at this point >.>

When you change the motherboard, you get a new chipset that your old windows install does not have the drivers for.
If the two motherboards are similar enough, you can boot to windows and use the cd that came with your new motherboard to upgrade the chipset drivers. I think you are faced with a clean install of windows which will wipe your hard drive.

This would be an opportune time to change to a SSD for the os. Do your clean install of windows there, and all your files(not programs) will still be available on the hard drive.

You will have to do a fresh install. You can create a partition and install windows on it, that way you have your old installation. You cannot use it but you can access the data. No programs will be useable though. Those will have to be reinstalled.

Which shouldnt be to bad. My only problem was that I have a few programs and games I no longer have the serial codes for. But no biggy I guess. Lol worth the upgrade. Thank you for all the help!
