Hi all, I just installed a new PSU (XFX 550 Core Edition) and a new graphics card (Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 from Zotac) and after doing so my PC shuts down after displaying the Windows 7 start up screen. You should know that I needed to remove one of my HDDs and unplug my 2 CD/DVD drives in order to make space for the card and therefore the current HDD is plugged in where one of the CD/DVD drives used to be positioned. My motherboard is the Inspiron 545 for what it's worth.

The 3 SATA connections here are the ones which I unplugged 2 CD/DVD drives from and one hard drive. The hard drives were originally connected in the blue and black connections beneath the graphics card, but evidently this is not possible so I changed my C drive to use the longer orange SATA cable to get over the card.

I'm not so worried about having to take out the CD/DVD Drives or hard drive as I wouldn't mind using external versions of the two, although I know at least one of the internal HDDs is required. My problem is that when I start up the PC, it gets to the 'Windows is starting' screen and by the end of the Windows 7 animation, the fan gets increasingly louder and then the computer just stops.

Thanks

Go into bios and redo your boot order. Windows is looking for your hdd on a sata connection that you disabled. Select the hdd that contains your os and reboot.

Edit: Or, move the orange sata cable to the usb controller you originally used.

Sorry for the double post, but the links didn't work and I can't edit them for some reason so here they are again:

I doubt it, I just tried to go into BIOS to do what Mark recommended and the fan spun up very quickly - I don't want to mess anything up though so I'm a bit weary to keep it on like that with the fan going so heavy though.
EDIT:
Just tried to run in safe mode and it said about launch windows to repair files, I left it for a few seconds to hear the fan and then it said 'Loading windows files' and then the PC cut out.

I just tried taking out the GTX 680 and using my GT 220 with the new PSU and the same connection setup and it got to the windows 7 loading screen (blue one) and said please wait and then cut out. I am going to put my PC back in its regular configuration with the new PSU and see what happens and then from there determine if it perhaps is a problem with it.
