Corrupted 2.4GHz 802.11b/g wifi signal but not 2.4GHz 802.11n?

Been having an issue for 8 months where, during the evening and sometimes in the afternoon, the wifi in my home is corrupted to a point where any product that uses up to g cannot be used but a laptop and a tablet with n can still run well, with some disconnects.

I understand that cordless phones, microwaves, the home, neighboring wifi networks, and people can affect it but nothing has changed in the home to allow this.

The only other thing I have found is that I have a neighbor two homes down that have a weak wifi network that permeates through and continues to be weak (-90 to -80) until I reach their door.

Could they be the problem? If so, why and how? If not, what can I do to cancel out or withstand the interference: changing the RTS/CTS or fragmentation values? Because I certainly cannot change the wireless adapters in the phones and laptops without dropping more money because of some other person's interference.

Thank you.

I have used this software to detect the signals around my area for many many months. I have kept my router's wifi at channel 1 (this channel rarely has any conflicting networks) as well as changing it to 6 or 11 but with no joy; the problem still continues.

However, with the software, I was able to detect routers from ARRIS and Hon Hai Precision (while the rest are netgear, linksys, dlink, etc), as I have described above, has a weak signal that has a far reach and seems to be the only thing new.

I understand that but nothing new has been introduced in my house (not apartment) that could explain this: same cordless phones, microwave barely used, etc etc.

If there are any access points running with hidden SSID (in violation of the RFC, but that's another topic for discussion) you won't see them. There is something in your area interfering with the signal. It doesn't have to be in, or even close by, your house to have an effect.

So what can I do as a solution? I do not want to believe that I would have to wire the entire house and move around my laptops chained by the length of the cables and my mobile devices being essentially worthless, or worse, pay to upgrade all the tech that is at most 5 years old.
