I am building a new PC and every time I try and install Windows 7 it freezes. The motherboard and graphics e.t.c also get very hot and during one test there was a strange smell...that’s when we ceased testing.

My spec is:
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 motherboard
AMD FX8150 CPU (Stock Fan)
2 x 4GB Crucial Ballistix 1866 RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5450 Graphics Card
128 Crucial SSD
Sony AD-5280S-0B CD Drive
500watt Power Supply
Sharkoon Tower Case VS3-V USB 3.0 (Has a fan on the front of the case)

Additional:
Thermal paste was applied correctly and the CPU has no bent pins.

Used 4pin power supply although board has an 8pin slot.

Everything was bought used appart from power supply and graphics card which were taken from my old build. (motherboard was bought refurbished)

When the computer crashed it seemed the mouse and keyboard where still functioning (i.e caps lock light would go on and off when caps lock was pressed) but the screen had froze.

CPU temprature was about 51c and system tempreture was about 39c when checked through the bios.

Many different things where tried like 1 stick of ram, switching the stick also changeing ram ports. Also using back USB ports for USB devices then using internal USB ports for USB devices.

My friend who used to work in a computer repair shop believes it is the motherboard.

Could this be the problem? :??:

Please help :)

Many thanks

Luke

The PSU is some cheap generic 500 watt.

Low on money was hoping that PSU would be sufficent.

That cheap junk isn't even remotely sufficient to supply an FX 8150. Get a genuine 500w PSU, if you have the cash. If you don't, save up and in the mean time, don't turn your PC on.

how do I ensure the mb bios is up to date? and if it is out of date, how do i update it? (sorry :( not that good with bios use)

Okay and also make sure the ram is sett to 1333.

The video card does not overheat in my original build. Which is where it is sat now :(

So the 4pin in a 8pin slot could be the problem? not the motherboard?

Could you explain for me the reason the power pin difference is a problem (sorry im a noob)

Will that 430w you recommend be powerful enough?

Can you suggest a low price PSU? like £30 ermm that would be about $45

Don't. Do. That.

Even if the motherboard works with a 4 pin 12 volt cable, you are still only providing half of the current carrying capacity which would be provided by an 8 pin EPS cable. That can overheat both the motherboard connector and 4 pin cable. Scorched or melted connectors can be a result. A motherboard which has the 8 pin EPS connector expects a lot of current and you are taking a serious risk by plugging in a 4 pin cable.

A quality PSU will shut off or cap the voltage if you try to pull excess current through the cable. A poor one will simply try to push all the voltage the motherboard asks for through the inadequate cable.

So will using a 4 Pin to 8 Pin adapter solve this? or is the only option a new PSU? any suggestions for a low cost PSU?

*facepalm* Holy crap. No on the adapter. No a lot.

Buy the corsair cx430. Yes, it's plenty.

A standard 4 pin connector is for standard CPUs with no overclocking enabled and the motherboard has few power phases. 8 pin CPU connectors are for motherboards with more power phases to support the CPUs wattage output, overclocking and many more features. If you don't plug in the correct pinned plug into the socket, your CPU won't have enough power from the PSU as will the motherboard, causing a crash.

To answer your second question, yes. It has much more connectors to support your system and will support your 8150 no problem without overclocking. If you're intentions are overclocking and getting a new, more powerful GPU down the road, you'll want to step up to the bigger brother of that PSU -

Seasonic S12-II 620w 80+ Bronze certified PSU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151096

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply :) I have just ordered a new PSU. Hopefully this will resolve the problem.

Thanks for your help and thanks to all the others that helped. I willinstall the PSU when it comes and let you know how it goes.
