Can get sound to play (CDs, youtube etc.) but not windows xp sounds e.g startup, email notification etc.

I can play CDs through WMP but I can't get any of the windows xp event sounds to function. Thanks in advance for any help offerred

Maybe you selected "no sounds" under control panel / sounds?

Thanks for your advice but I already tried that. I think I'm gonna have to give up on sound effects. Not the end of the world I suppose.
