My opinion is that ddr2 is still good. There is little diffrence between ddr3 and ddr2. The speed is unnoticeable. The only scepticle thing is the price. Ddr2 sticks are WAY more expensive than ddr3 sticks BUT, if you look at ddr2 boards vs ddr3 boards, most of the ddr2 boards are cheaper. Personally, upgrading to ddr2 is NOT worth is performance wise unless you are using lga 775 (I'm an AMD guy) What do you think?

ddr2 boards are cheaper because they are older. i dont think ive seen a new board that supports ddr2 in a long time (since lga775 if i remember correctly). so yes youll save some money on the motherboard, but you'll be getting older stuff.

also im not sure that the speed is "unnoticeable"

well ddr3 runs at half the clock rate of ddr2,is twice as fast, has about twice the transfer rate, and uses less power,so im thinking ddr3 is technologically superior.that having been said,i run an old phenom triple core overclocked and my board only supports ddr2. this system is plenty fast for me,so in my case ddr2 rocks.lol. the simple fact is sooner or later the old technology is going to be harder and harder to find, not to mention expensive. with my system i think i will hang on and wait for ddr4 before upgrading. i guess time will tell.

Yes and No.

A system with DDR2 memory will also have a slower CPU than you can buy now so the System RAM didn't need to be as fast.

In a modern gaming rig with DDR3 memory even 1600MHz can be a bottleneck at times.

Unless you have a motherboard that supports DDR2 and DDR3 and currently have DDR2 the entire issue is moot anyway as you'd simply build a new system using the cheaper, faster DDR3.

I don't know if you realize this but those are numbers... The actual noticable performance increase is small and only shows up in memory intensive programs.

yes they are only numbers, but in this case they are indicative of a performance increase.an increase that is noticable.but the performance increase is not at all the only deciding factor here.as another poster mentioned, its older technology ie slower cpus.its also expensive and destined to get more so.then there is availability,or lack thereof. i dont know if you are trying to defend owning an older system or you are really interested in other opinions or not.i own an antique myself an dont give a rats ass what anybody thinks about it.lol.bottom line to me is a ddr2 system in general will noticeably lack in performance compared to a newer ddr3 system.

what he said pretty much sums it up.

also it makes sense that the speed of faster memory only shows up in memory intensive programs, thats what its made for. thats similar to saying a faster gpu only benefits in gpu intensive programs. faster memory has a purpose. ddr3 is newer, faster (albeit not ALWAYS noticeable), and cheaper...so why argue that ddr2 is worthwhile?
