Hello. I have never built a PC but know you get more bang for your buck by building over buying pre assembled.

Background:
-I use UbuntuStudio 64bit for my OS so no cost there
-Kdenlive for my video editing
-I already have a storage hard drive, optical drive, mouse, keyboard, speakers, 26" 1080 television I use for a monitor
-Current specs 2.6 dual core AMD, 4gb ram, geforce 8600GT
-I normally load 20-60gb of HD footage into Kdenlive when editing. I don't get any playback at all when adding effects so I kinda shoot in the dark after adding effects and transitions. Rendering time for a 5 minute video is a little more than an hour.

Looking at the AMD FX-8350 for my processor. Best value for the money considering this low budget build?

-Would a small SSD for the OS be beneficial?
-Would a fast HDD for a scrach disk be beneficial?
-I have no clue on motherboard, case, or cooling
-How much ram is really necessary? I have 4gb right now and its pretty much maxed out when editing.
-Have to be able to connect to the internet wirelessly. I can always add that later though.

For a background of the videos I make you can check out my YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/jayscustomcreations

Can anyone recomend a build for me? $700 max. Any and all help is greately appreciated! I have never built a PC but I'm a big DIY guy. I have no problem learning how to assemble a computer but the terminology of cores, hyperthreading, cooling specifications, motherboards is a bit over my head.

Solution
id suggest something like this
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1HrtG

-the e3 1230v2 is about the same as a i7 3770 without graphics for the price of a i5. out of the box it will be faster than the 8350 but if you overclock to around 4.5ghz you will have equal or better performance at the cost of power consumption and heat
-you will want more ram than 8gb for editing
-an SSD will make a difference in editing and scratch purposes
-not a crappy psu

Thanks for the reply. So the e3 1230v3 with a lower ghz number will be faster than the 8350 at 4.0ghz stock? I have been referred to the 8350 by a few other Linux users as the rendering in Kdenlive is is acutally done by the command line tool melt. I really like the idea of a SSD for the operating drive. I like your parts selection but this whole amd vs intel debate is really confusing. Everyone has a different opinion lol. Thanks for the help by the way.

Thanks again for your reply. I have never overclocked anything and I don't think I will venture down that path. After some more research I think I will definitely take your suggestion with the CPU. It seems everyone refers to it as a hidden gem. I have never built a system so I have a couple pretty dumb questions.
-Is that graphics card overkill? I play games very little and most of the time its old school emulator stuff. However, I do use Google Sketchup for 3d modeling every single day.
-Would it be better to add a PCI-express wireless card or upgrade the MB slightly to have integraded WIFI?
-Really dumb question...Will these parts come with all the necessary cables or do I need to purchase some as well. Like the data cables for the SSD, and I will add another old HDD with it's SATA cable. Will it connect?

I have never built a system but I have disassembled my current system to clean it out so I am pretty confident I can put it all together. It's just picking parts that's way over my head.

Thank you so much again for all of your help!

the cards kinda overkill, but it is the best bang for the buck. if you want something cheaper, the 7770 is a great option.

if you want wifi, grab this. TP link products are pretty good.

everything is inside the box. newegg also has a guide for building your own computer. go search it up on youtube. the second and third part will help.

Thanks so much for all of your help. I added another storage drive and just ordered this setup. A bit more than my budget but it was a little flexible.

I decided it would be wise to get it now and not have to upgrade later if I wanted to get back into playing games. I was trying to be consirvative with my budget at first but I think a tad over is ok. Combine that with the fact that I got trigger happy and impaitient as I am using my wife's laptop now I decided to go ahead with it. I'm sure I will not be disapointed as this is a MAJOR upgrade from what just died on me. Thanks again for all of your help!
