GPU Fans Won't Spin in New System

Hi There, today I have finally gotten around to putting together a new system with all new parts except that I am keeping my current GPU which is an Asus GTX 580 Matrix Platinum (one of those giant 3-slot cards). The problem I am facing is that after I have assembled the system and installed all drivers everything is running smooth until I boot up a fullscreen game (Counter-Strike) It will run perfectly for about 30-60 seconds then start to get really choppy then the screen will turn off and remain off until I perform a hard reset (note also sound cuts out but System does seem to remain on without resetting itself for some reason).

After hours of trying to solve the problem myself I ran a temperature monitoring program and surprise surprise we have temperatures in excess of 105 (Celsius) this then lead me to believe there was a problem with the fans as I remember that when the temp would near around 70 the noise would be as if there was a jet engine in the room about to take off. I then looked into the case with the system still running and sure enough the fans are dead still.

Keeping in mind I used this same card just hours before putting it in my new system and it worked flawlessly so I'm assuming (and hoping) its a driver/software issue. The card is also recognised in 'dxdiag' and pretty much everywhere else and it also says the drivers are installed correctly. What I've tried:

Installing latest Nvidia drivers (327.23)
Wiping and then re-installing drivers that came with original Driver disc (270.61)
Playing around with fan speed control software that came with Driver disc, no success.

If anyone has any advice on how to get the fans spinning again it would be greatly appreciated also keeping in mind this is a brand new system with a clean install so if you feel like saying "Oh by the way did you install that or configure this?" I might've missed something, I'm not perfect.

System Specs:

Intel i5 4440 Processor
ASRock Z87 Extreme-6 Motherboard
Geil 2x 4GB Sticks of RAM (8GB)
Thermaltake Tough Power XT 775W PSU
Samsung 840 Series 250GB SSD
Zalman Z5+ Mid-Case
Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate 64-bit

Looks like your might be out of luck and will need to RMA the card. You can try two things though.

One is to unplug the power to the card and replug it in. Maybe, just maybe, the fan connector wasn't plugged in all the way and so they couldn't start.

I'd also suggest, if you have your old system, to try putting it back in there and seeing if it works. If it still does, then we know it isn't he GPU but something related to the new system (hardware or software). We can try to figure out what it is once we know though.

If that's not working, then your fans are probably done for. I've seen reports of this with the 580, I'm not sure how common but it isn't unheard of. In that case you can RMA it or build your own makeshift fan replacement...

Thankyou for your response, seeing as this PSU is modular would you also recommend trying different ports aswell whilst attempting to reconnect the power source. Also would you recommend trying my old PSU's PCI-E power cables as they clearly worked before now??

Are you sure the card/fans could be a problem as I said I was literally gaming with it right before I took it out and planted it into new system. The card is under 2 years old and very rarely gets a good workout as I mostly play graphically underwhelming games such as Counter-Strike and League of Legends etc.

I'd try a combination of different PSU ports and cables, just to make sure that's not the problem. You could also try to the old PCI-E power cables. Basically try each combination. You probably want to download a GPU testing program so you can quickly get it cranking and see if the fans are running, rather than having to load a game and wait.

We want to isolate the problem, so whatever tests you can perform to eliminate potential issues will help. The best test would be putting it into the old machine if it's available still.

I don't know for sure that the fans are the problem, but if you google 580 fans not working, you'll see others having the issue. For them it happened all of a sudden, without warning. This may not be your issue, but until we rule it out by somehow getting them to work, it's a possibility.

Okay I have tried a few things with no success,

Re-plugging in the power connecters as firmly as I could and different power sockets on PSU.
Tried an entirely different PCI-Express slot on motherboard
Couldn't try the old Power cables from old PSU as they were only 6-pin on the PSU end and this PSU only has 8pin connecters on the PSU itself.

However, I borrowed a friends old GTX280 plugged it in, booted the system and straight away the onboard fan was spinning... So I guess this points to the GTX 580 being defective. This is very disheartening as I never really pushed the card to its limits and I assure you I was gaming with the card minutes before I put it into the new system and did so with extreme care not dropping the card or touching the gold teeth etc.

Is there any other possibility as to why the fans aren't spinning on the GTX580? I'm willing to try anything.

EDIT: I'll also add that this particular card has coloured Status lights (Load, Idle, Heavy Load etc.) The colour is always Light Green which indicates the card is in safe-mode. I have not purposely put the card in safe-mode and I have tried pressing the safe-mode button and nothing changes. Not sure if this will help.

Try activating safemode again.

To do it, hold down the safemode button while booting your computer and then the LED will start pulsing green. Once Windows has started, the software that came with it (GPU Tweak, install it first if you haven't already) will pop up asking if you want to restore the card. Do that to restore it to factory defaults.

Followed the safe-mode reset procedure and it made lots of Beeps and Chirps, said the reset was successful but still the fans aren't moving. I wish I knew what I could've done to kill the Fan Controller the Fan Plug is tucked away underneath the Heatsink (Tried unplugging and plugging that back in, no luck) so I couldn't have damaged it while switching it over. I wasn't wearing one of those Grounding wristbands (Never have) is it possible I passed over a small jolt that created a short on the card?

The only other thing I'd try to do is put the card into another system. I know your old system doesn't have the power, but maybe your friends does?

You have one of two problems, the GPU is messed up or your new build isn't getting enough power to your GPU. It's rare that your GPU would suddenly stop working just from moving it, but there's a small chance. We need to establish if the GPU itself is okay by testing it on another system that's known to work. The 280 you tested isn't enough to say that your new build is fine because the power requirements aren't the same.

Btw have you tried using a program like MSI Afterburner to manually start the fans? I don't remember if you did that already, but that's a test you could do.

Lastly, just check your warranty on the card, it's probably 3 years and if so you'll be okay to RMA it.
