Hi, I am new to this Tom's Hardware so I am looking forward to hearing from you guys. First I will give you my PC specs

Intel i7 processer 64bit 8GB Ram
NVIDIA GTX 650 TI

All my drivers are up to date according to the device manager

Every-night before I go to bed I clean my PC with CCleaner and look for any updates with windows update.

The problem is, When I launch any game e.g. Team Fortess 2, battlefield 3... I could be playing it for around 1 hour. sometimes it could be 2 minutes, Then the audio repeats and it is crashed so i have to do CTRL ALT DEL to get out. In the past I think I may of had this problem but now it happens a bit more often.

What I don't understand is someday's I can game all day or maybe 2-3 days without this problem. It is so frustrating because I have only had my PC for a year and I have Pre-ordered Ghosts for it and hoping to get this problem solved.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you
Matt

first you're gonna have to do a little leg work.

1) get yourself memtest86, you're going to need to pull all but one stick of ram out of your machine and run memtest86 on the last stick of ram. let it run 5 or more passes, then turn off the machine and try again with the next stick of ram. if it comes back with "errors" you have bad ram.

2) next dl prime95 hwmonitor and coretemp. Install coretemp/hwmonitor, then run prime95, watch the temps on your system with hwm and ct. make sure they don't top 85C on the cpu, or 70C on anything else (the gpu should be alright above 70C but if you're getting 70C on anything other then the cpu/cpu socket and gpu turn off prime95. if your system crashes report back here what type of crash it was and the temps you were getting at the time of the crash. i want you to let prime95 run for a few hours; but watch it closely until the temps on your cpu stabilize...

lets start with that and see what comes up.

I don't really feel comfortable taking my PC apart, Not the wizard of PC's but I do have a bit of knowledge on them. I have used PC Wizard to check all my temperatures and there all fine. Max is 40 degress

I understand this is intimidating. but if you aren't going to take our advice and try to fix this problem you'll have to pay some guy who probably doesn't know what he's doing to look at it for you.

+1 you don't need to take your PC apart to do any of this its all software that you can download for free.

Do you mind telling me this software please? If I put the game on really high settings do you think that is what could be causing the crashing/freezing? I have just done a big cleanup on my PC which I done about 3 times a week, I look if there is any programmes I can unistall that I don't need, Then I look for updates, Then run CCleaner and disk driver cleaner, then do a scan with windows defender, then restart.

Memtest checks your ram is stable there is no need to remove a stick unless its finds an error you cvan get it from with more info here http://www.memtest.org/
Prime 95 is a CPU stress test (puts 100% load on thew CPU to check its stable) and HWMonitor is a temperature monitor you only need this or core temp not both, to check what temps your CPU hits in prime 95 to see if its overheating.
To be honest I suspect your over paranoid PC clean up routine could have caused the problem by removing something thats needed, as long as you are running an anti virus windows can more or less look after itself, if thos is the case a total reinstall may be the easiest way to get it back.

I'm assuming with the presence of an i7-3820 and a corresponding LGA 2011 chipset and a gtx 650 Ti, this PC was bought, pre-built? Regardless, I would run furmark and prime95 at the same time to stress the PC at max load. If you start artifacting, shut down furmark asap and get a new PSU.

If you've never opened your PC, then I suspect you may have a dust issue. I'd take a few minutes to watch some youtube videos on how to open a PC and how to clean out the dust. Dust can be conductive in some situations, and not every component inside your PC is able to be measured for temperature.

Okay i experienced this issue before too and this was all caused by faulty drivers, know what i mean? u mentioned that u update ur drivers every day so maybe that's the root of your issue..... all i had to do to solve it was roll back my video driver.....good luck :)

Yes I got it pre-built. Do you think the dust it causing it. I was playing Sleeping Dogs before and I keep on getting the "Not responding" Error. Then I have to do CTRL ALT DEL to get out of the freeze.

I have recently upgraded the NVIDIA Driver, It did happen in the past but it has happened more when I upgraded it. I might try to roll it back, Do you think it will work

Yes it is Pre-Built. How do I use Furmark and Prime95?

It is a very easy thing to check, and can be done in parallel with the other suggestions. You really should clean it a couple times a year as preventative maintenance anyway.

How would you recommend to clean it? I have rarely opened up my PC.

The simplest way is to go and buy a can of compressed air, open the case outdoors, and blow a series of short bursts until you don't see dust flying around any more. You'll want to focus on heat sinks, fans, cpu cooler, power supply, memory, slots...pretty much anywhere you see or suspect dust. Avoid using a vacuum cleaner because contact with the board with the nozzle or a brush attachment might cause static electricity damage.

Google on "dusty pc" and you'll see what happens when you don't clean your PC. The presence of carpets and pets accelerates accumulation of dust, as does leaving the PC on for long periods.

Again, may not be your issue, but good practice.

OK, I have just took my pc lid off and dusted all inside and took out the ram and put it back in, I have now just done a big clean on my PC I haven't tried any games yet. Might wait until tomorrow and give it a rest :p I don't understand because sometimes I can play a game for days without this problem and somedays only minutes and it freezes/not responding. I think it may be because I am playing some games on really high settings and my PC can't handle it. What do you guys think?
