I went to boot up my pc today and as soon as I hit the power button there was a very loud bang. It won't power on. Nothing smells strange inside. The front panel connectors (Like power button, reset button leds, etc, was blown out of the pins for it.) What happened? I'm pretty sure my psu is dead but is my motherboard/other components possibly dead too? Please help. Thank you.

It's not from the motherboard.

That's part of the PG-TO220 package from one of the four switching power transistors inside the XFX ProSeries 750W P1-750B-BEFX power supply unit.

The loud bang usually happens when something on the primary side of the power supply unit fails. The switching transistors are on the primary side of the PSU.

Thanks for the quick reply, it was a pretty good psu in my opinion. XFX 750W Fully Modular 80+ Gold, said to be made by Seasonic which should be a good company. Do you think it's possible it could have damaged anything else in my computer? Do you know if warranty would cover it if it did? Thanks again man.

Seasonic are some of the best, but you don't always get lucky. There are tell tale signs that components have been damaged by a power surge, like burst capacitors (check google images). However, what you really need to do is get another PSU in there and see what's working. As for whether it's covered, you'd need to contact XFX to find that out.

I found a piece of something in my computer when taking the power supply out. I don't think it came from the power supply, I think it came off of the motherboard. Here's a link to it. https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/v/1239995_684234264920148_981334187_n.jpg?oh=dd45d360407dfe46b186266c961e60e9&oe=52452730

Sounds like you really know your stuff! Thanks for the clear answer, now I just need to get in contact with XFX which is proving to be hard. Do you know why the front panel connector cables would be blown out of the pins on my motherboard? Do you think it could've damaged the mobo too?

I've heard that XFX's customer support isn't that great.

Are you sure your front panel cable connectors weren't loose initially?

There's a pretty good chance that the motherboard and other components didn't get damaged at all. You would need to connect up another PSU to the motherboard to be able to determine that.

Yes I'm sure they were in securely, they were pushed all the way onto the pins. Each connected individually to the pin so it kind of surprised me that ALL of them were out of their pins. I emailed XFX yesterday and haven't gotten a reply yet. I emailed MSI to see what they thought about the motherboard and got a reply within 15 minutes. I don't really look to hear much from XFX. I'll probably just have to end up buying another psu. Thanks, you've been a great help

New computer (3-4 few months old), Corsair RM 1000 PSU, and had similar experience. Was in "sleep" mode, and when it came out ... BANG ... and completely dead. Have had PCs since the early 80s (TRS 80) and this is my first blown power supply, so I was surprised to find similar stories so easily. Nothing new in the world, I guess. Should have a new PSU tomorrow. Hopefully, replacing the blown one will be the end of the story ... at least for a while.
