I have a lot stuff that i store and use occasionally and need to safely store them. I currently have a 1.5 TB internal and external and apparently my external dies after a year and need to know the best thing to do. My internal is almost 2 years old and external is 1. I use S.M.A.R.T To check everything and they seem fine but i need to know for future reference. Since most externals don't last long what is the best thing to store data on.

Edit: im currently in a dorm and dont care for a fire or it being stolen im more worried about storage and keeping it safe since i store and use my externals all the time and they are on at least all day exept for at night

More about : safe storage

I would go with 2 externals :)  Even better if one can be kept in a safe offsite location when not in use(houses do burn down and flood[bad things happen]).

not too likely that 2 drives will fail at the same time.

I have had good luck with my external's(swapped out for larger drives when I needed more space.)

Recently picked up a 3tb WD external and hope it lasts as long as my old no name drive that was only replaced because the enclosure will not take a 3tb drive(was only good up to 2tb).

Please note my backup drives is off at all times that I am not running a backup.

Archival quality dvds are real good to use too IMO. They just seem to pile up after years. LoL
