Hi there, sorry if this is in the wrong section but I'm new and I couldn't find a psu section?
I'm looking to choose a psu for my computer that I'm building, my build thus far:
Mobo: asus z87 pro
Ram: corsair vengeance 8gb low profile
Case: coolermaster storm enforcer
CPU: intel i5 4670k
CPU cooler: coolermaster hyper 212 evo
Hdd: wd caviar black 1tb
Ssd: samsung 840 pro 256gb
OS: windows 7 64 bit
Gpu: still to be decided but either the gtx 770 or 780 or one of Amds new cards

Additional info: I live in Australia and psus are incredibly expensive compared to the US however I can get some shipped from amazon, the on I'm looking at currently is the corsair ax 860 but I'm not sure if this is a little extreme for my needs, I do plan on playing around with some overclocking (I'm new to all this) and will likely sli or crossfire in the future so I do want it to be somewhat future proof. Feel free to make any suggestions about the rest of the build as well if you like? I haven't bought any of the parts yet. How important is getting a good psu? I am on a budget and the ax 860 is 170 on amazon and I'd love to get that down a little. Would like modular if possible?

Thanks for any help and advice you can give

Sorry, I forgot to mention, the cheapest site in Australia for goods is pccasegear (not sure if I'm allowed to post links?) but for the same cost as the corsair ax 860 ($170) I could only get a bronze rated psu? I can still get cheaper ones from amazon so I was wondering if it would be better to go for a cheaper one? Sorry if I'm needlessly blabbing

The HX is still very good but not in the same league as the other 2. It's made by Corsair's usual OEM Channel Well Technology ( CWT ).

I don't know about the motherboards without looking at each board and comparing features. Both are solid. Get the one with the features you need.

I see, what about accounting for capacitor ageing? Also is there anything between a platinum rated psu like the 860 and a bronze one besides power efficiency?
Thanks for the quick reply.

Recommendations:

1) GTX770:
- get the Asus DC2OC version.

2) GTX780:
- get the EVGA 780 with ACX cooler (1020MHz boost version)

3) SSD:
- get the EVO instead of the PRO

4) Motherboard:
- consider the Asus Hero VI (with SupremeFX audio)

5) OS:
- get Windows 8 64-bit
- get Start8 from Stardock for Windows 8 to bypass new interface/add Start Menu

6) *POWER SUPPLY:
- the Rosewill 750W is great, but not sure of availability there. Recommend a 750W with 4x 6/8-pin and GOOD customer review ratings.

7) DDR3 memory (1866MHz or 2133MHz low CL):

Capacitor aging is a nonissue with modern power supplies. They do age but just a few percent a year. I am going to say you would be crazy to try to run GTX 780 Sli with a 650w power supply of any type. Most people tend to think they need way more than they actually do but in this case the 650w number is way under what would be recommended.

Read that guru3d article more carefully... We'll be calculating the GPU power consumption here, not the total PC power consumption. So as you can see the cards alone pull 440 watts.

Read on down on that guru3d page and see that they recommend 800 watts.

RealhardtechX recommends 850w mostly because there are no quality 800w units. These guys maintain the most comprehensive power supply database online and can be trusted.

http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page362.htm

So 850 watts it is. Corsair, Seasonic, PC Power and Cooling, OCZ, Silverstone, Enermax, Antec or the high efficiency Rosewill units for quality.

With a high end system like that don't try to save money with a cheap power supply.

Cheers photonboy,
As for the gpus if I were to go nvidia I did plan on going with evga as you suggested for the SSD, there was minimal differnece in price between them and I was under the impression that the pro was slightly better (lasts longer and more powerful?), what is the reason for the evo? I will certainly look into the motherboard and I'm a little apprehensive about windows 8, I'm sure I'd get used to it but windows 7 I know and love, are there any performance increases with windows 8? For the psu, go for the gold or the bronze? And I did kind of want modular or is there not much in it? I was originally going to get some higher clocked ram but from research people advised against it? Apparently three would be no noticibel increase in performance?
I don't mean to disagree with you as your obviously far more knowledgeable that I am but could you elaborate further on these points?
Thanks again
Finn

That was my thinking, is the ax 860 a good choice in your opinion (had some concerns about coil whine) or would it be better to go for a cheaper rated psu like a bronze one? I won't be going sli for at least a year I don't think, I'll add it when what ever gpu I choose is struggling.
Thanks for the reply

Haha I was a little surprised at the figures! So that is a good psu in your opinion? Any other possibles for less (I'm on a budget) and I did hear that this is somewhat prone to coil whine?
Thanks

There is an AX 860 made by Seasonic based on the Seasonic X platform. It's one of the best units on the market.
There is an AX 860i made by Flextronics. The AXi units are about the only power supply line that is just as good as the Seasonic X platform. It is also one of the best units on the market.

Either the AX or AXi are top quality either is a great choice.

Just off from the psu topic and to photonboy's post, how does the asus. VI hero compare with the z87 pro? I went for the pro mostly for the features and the wifi go looked interesting and would save me buying a separate modem. Any thoughts?
Thanks

Looked at the axi but it was more expensive and i wouldn't use the software it came with being a noob to all this ;) I did look at the corsair hx 750 which goes for about $110 on amazon, would that be a good alternative?
Thanks for the replies

Thanks anort,
I did like the feature with the z87 pro, as for the psu you think that the ax 860 would be the best choice for my needs?

Literally identical on the inside except maybe the fan. Get the cheaper one or the one you like the looks of. You can also look for the Seasonic X 850. It might be on sale or something lucky.

Lol. Nope just something I saw online. Tom's just did a major forum overhaul and I was testing to see if a .gif would work. Ended up liking it.

The quote is from Aliens actually. Best movie ever.

Glad to help! :)
