I have had this desktop since 2009 and never had any problems with it until lately. I have had a system restore and clean-up and some other stuff but this just will not go away and I can't figure out how to fix it. I have checked my speakers they seem fine sound is coming out of computer ok, but I just have a grey pop up coming up with a yellow speaker on it and I can't move it or click it off or anything. It's like it's being controlled somewhere else. Does anyone know how to fix this? It's really bothering me and very scary because I have already fixed a virus on my laptop.

Check your installed software, that often comes up from an add-on software to show the volume on the screen when it's being changed. Maybe something from the vendor.

Not sure if that would have worked or not. Thanks for the input, but that box never did go away and I just recently switched to another desktop also Vista because of other problems with the computer as well and the grey box popped back up on the screen last night. The original problem was the box but before it showed up other boxes popped up showing what looked like volume but it switched to French on its own. Is this a monitor problem since it came back with a different computer?

Does your monitor have a speaker? Check the options, maybe it has a way to display it's settings on the screen.
