I'm shopping for a tv to use as my monitor for my pc I'm building currently and can't decide on what type of tv to get. I'm trying to be as cheap/frugal as possible. I've seen numerous deals for 42-46" lcd for around $300 which is up my ally, but they are Sanyo, Septre, etc brand. We recently purchased a 50" LG 1080p plasma for $400 and I'm debating if it's worth it to just spend the extra money for a name brand.

The other argument is the constant lcd vs. led vs. plasma. Too many people saying one is better than the other and it makes my head spin. Getting a 46" lcd seems like a great VALUE over what typical 46" leds cost.

What is Tom's opinion on this matter and why?

Personally, if I were using the money to buy a screen for my gaming rig, I would put it towards a 1980x1200P IPS Panel monitor. For $300, you can get something in the 24-27" range, and it can double as a TV with coaxial tuner ($40?).

TVs don't handle PC content as nicely as a good monitor. I have a 47" Vizio that looks great watching blue-ray & HD cable. Playing BF3 or Crysis on it is another story. Looks like dog-doo compared to my Dell 24" IPS (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824260047)

As for LCD, LED, and Plasma. LCD & LED is all about back-lighting. You may have a longer bulb life & a little more brightness with the LED over the LCD. The cost savings on the LCD will make you forget about that extra...
Hello.
If I were you I would buy a 42" LED than a 46" LCD. (in order to equally the price)
The reason? 3 of them.
1st The LED have better colors and brighter. LEDs also have better Black.
2nd they are thinner and lighter.
3rd you can find more models in order to satisfy your needs(hz, internet etc etc) than the simple lcd.

As for LCD, LED, and Plasma. LCD & LED is all about back-lighting. You may have a longer bulb life & a little more brightness with the LED over the LCD. The cost savings on the LCD will make you forget about that extra brightness you probably wouldn't notice anyway. My Vizio is an LCD and the fluorescent bulb it uses is still going strong five years later, not to mention super easy to replace, when it does go out.

Plasma is going to give you more vivid colors, deeper blacks, but brightness is a problem if you can't control the light in the room. If you're serious about a 3D home theatre, Plasma is king. Also, you'll get the biggest TV for the lowest price when it comes to plasma. 50" and bigger is the norm. The downside to plasma, you will need to calibrate your color panel, and there is a burn-in period. Static images can be harmful if you're gaming for long hours too.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the comments so far! For me, the most important factor is cost so that's my first priority. But, if say we're comparing a 46" Sanyo lcd vs a 42" LG led and they're the same price I'm going with the LG.

Ghengis, I have no doubt that monitor is a great screen to game on! For myself I am new to pc gaming but I already know I dislike sitting in a chair for an extended period of time to game. Also, while I understand this is blasphemy for most pc gamers, I have no interest in using a mouse+keyboard to game so the tv+couch+controller is better suited for me.

Walmart recently had tv clearance prices and the best deal I found was a 47" LG LED for around $400 iirc, but no Walmart within a 100 mile radius of me claimed to have it :(
