Can't get motherboard to recognize USB devices

I am trying to get my motherboard to read my flash drive, but numerous attempts have failed and my motherboard just flat out won't recognize it. My motherboard is Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3P Rev 1.0, BIOS version F7 running Intel Core i5-3450. Plugging in numerous USB devices and even my phone have caused the USB ports to report "device has malfunctioned" errors despite that they worked perfectly before I reformatted my drive. But I have also been attempting to install the Intel INF controller and the original USB 3.0 drivers that came with the motherboard only to have the driver installation program report errors. The system device manager lists all the devices working perfectly, but attempts to plug in new devices will cause the system to not recognize these drives. It also reports the SM Bus Controller as having a missing driver. What is going on here? Is this a motherboard problem or a driver problem?
