I was trying to find the drivers for this windows 98 pc so I could use a flash drive. I found this site http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/win98fe-usb-ma....

There was a section that said "Download and install the Windows 98 Service Pack" so I preceded to do so. Once it said complete it said to restart so I did. Now it says "while initializing device CONFIGMC: windows protection error. You need to restart your computer" when I try to boot. I can get into safe mode but I dont know what to do ?

What version of 98 are you running? Is it the original edition or SE? (That site you linked is for the first edition and not SE.)

To start I would uninstall that "service pack."

If you are running SE, I would recommend THIS UPDATE, but read the caveats first, especially about running IE. Also take a look at THIS SITE for information and links to running USB drivers on 98. They work. You can get many USB sticks to work -- I even have a set of old old (Panasonic) drivers and connect USB sticks to a DOS installation.

I tried to Uninstall the service pack using "Add/Remove Program" and it would not work. So I saw something how to restore hoping that would fix it so i gave it a try. the command was "scanreg /restore" that I put command prompt and I picked a previous date and still did not work.

so I went back to "Add/Remove Program" to try to uninstall the service pack again and it was not there. but there was some new things that were not there prior but not sure what they look like file paths to something.

For the version According to the link i sent you it said that first edtion was 4.10.1998 which is was now it says 4.10.2222 since the patch.

Do you have the Windows 98 original edition or SE installed?

Do you still have your install disk?

Yes 98 4.10.2222 is SE. That pack you installed was for the first edition. I would backup any important data and then try patching it to the correct ones that I linked, which will give you correct drivers since you cannot uninstall it.

I would restore to what was working and just install the USB drivers from HERE if you really need them. It took me weeks to get the USB drivers working in DOS, but as the computer didn't have a floppy drive it was necessary.
