Are all the socket thingies different? Like if I keep doing trial and error will I have all my plugs fit in the correct slot?

and do the slots I put the RAM in matter?

Solution
the power connectors are keyed you cant mess them up. the eight pin cpu plug on the edge of the mb will uses two four pin or one large black eight pin connector not the six plus two cables.
look on your mb guild and the mb. most mb use the a0 and b0 as main two slots. the a1 and b1 are the next bank.

If talking the wired connections, yes, many will fit only one way, others like the Front Panel connectors need to be plugged to the correct pins and connected with hot to hot, ground to ground, DRAM depends on how many slots and how many sticks - all the info you need is in your manual - if you don't have one go to the mobo makers site and download it
