Hello,
I have 2 large external hard drives that I travel with for work. They are filled with work stuff, movies and music. I am always loaning the drives to colleagues. The trouble is, some of them move the files off my drive instead of copying them and I often don't find out until weeks later. Is there a simple way to lock all the files so people can only copy them - NOT move them. Cheers

Read permissions only on particular folders
and.or
Delete permissions only on particular folders or the whole drive)
and/or
A whole other drive with only what you want to share

Why trust other people with full CRUD access to stuff you do not want them to have? Someone will screw it up.

I suggest you get another drive to be your 'loaner'.

a whole other drive is the best solution as mentioned above.

Even if you set permissions on the extenal drive, that can easily be circumvented.

I understand your predicament though, you probably only loan it out a few times per year, but that is enough to screw things up.

I am also now more inclined to suggest having one or more USB thumb-type drives instead to loan out. I'm guessing that people only really need to borrow your drives to carry around a few gig or data such as what 8-64 gb thumb drives hold.
