Hello there,

My HP-DV7 notebook HDD has recently been unresponsive. It's a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 500GB (ST9500325AS) & it simply crashed one day, leaving my OS frozen. When I rebooted the notebook, the BIOS was able to read the HDD just fine & it past the diagnostics check test; however, when I would begin to load Windows, it would just hang at the opening load screen.

I decided to remove the HDD from my notebook & test it on a USB exclosure with my desktop PC. The HDD never made any clicking noises, it's never been dropped, & I didn't notice any marks on the PCB. When used thorugh USB on my desktop, it's recognized by the system, but nothing can load or read from the drive. It doesn't appear in My Computer and any HDD management software like EASEUS that could read unformatted drives would just hang until the program is forceably closed. It is recognized in the device manager along with all the driver details (in the drop-down list), I'm not sure if any of the info it provides can help in diagnosing the HDD's problem.

I went ahead and bought the same drive on eBay, hoping that it could be fixed by simply switching the PCB board, but to no avail. As a matter of fact, it's the same Momentus build but a different hardware model. I only found out after jumping the gun that PCB board swapping is a bit more complicated than a simple switch. The new drive is at least serving as a temporary main drive for my laptop, but I really need my old HDD back. There's pleanty of important work that I need to salvage from it.

If there's a permanent or even a temporary fix that anyone knows of, please, I really need to get my files back.

Thanks for your time!

HD Tune Pro 5.0 hangs when I try to start it up whilst the HDD is powered on. If I have HD Tune running first & then I power the HDD on, the program becomes unresponsive when I select the HDD.

I can hear the HDD making a very faint clicking noise, a healthy click heard when all HDDs seek data, but it becomes endless as programs attempt to access the HDD. I'm not even sure if the Hard Disc is spinning or not.

I know a vendor I can purchase the exact PCB I need, but I read somewhere that I'd need to swap & solder the BIOS chip paired with my drive to the new PCB. Is that actually necessary?

I have soldering equipment available, but I have no experience with soldering.
