i7 3770k all of a sudden running hot

I just recently installed a new motherboard and i7-3770k and I've had absolutely no issues with it running at an overclock of 4.5ghz for about two months now. It usually idles in the 30's and gaming usually brought it to around the 50's. I monitor my temperatures every single day since they are ALWAYS being displayed on my Logitech G15 display. Now all of a sudden starting today, the temperatures are much higher than normal and I haven't changed any settings at all. At the time of writing this, it is idling at 57c and during gaming it rises above 70c.

Here are my hardware specs:

Cpu: Intel i7 3770k @4.5ghz 1.21v
Mobo: Asrock z77 OC Formula
Cpu cooler: Corsair H100i
Gpu: Evga GTX 780 w/acx
SSD/HDD: Sandisk Extreme 240gb/ 1tb wd caviar black @7200rpm

I went into the bios to double check my settings just to be sure nothing was changed somehow. Then I tried cleaning and re-applying the thermal paste, which is still giving me the same results. Could it be the pump on the H100i? According to the CorsairLink2 software, the pump is working just fine though. I know that these chips run hot apparently, but I don't understand how I was getting such amazing temps for 2 months and all of a sudden they sky rocket. :(

Ok well as the above user mentioned, something is effecting the liquid flow. at those temperatures, the rad should be HOT.

You can try to reinstall the pump/coldplate one more time ,but if that does not fix it, the cooler is defective and needs replacing. If you have the stock cooler, even it will be better for now(clean up the cpu's heat spreader real good before putting any other cooler on).

Please check the rad for dust.


Has the fan profile been changed? Do the fans seem to be running slow?
How hot does the cold plate get in the corsair link software, they list it as liquid temperature.
Maybe the cooler is not seated right(that should be near impossible for the H100i's mounting system however)?

I forgot to mention that I also took it out back and dusted the radiator out with compressed air. So it's actually nice and dust free, even though it didn't seem to lower my temps. I checked the fan profile and it's still the same (Balanced Mode). Fans are running at proper speeds. For "H100 Temp 1" I'm seeing 72c right now with both radiator fans at 2023 rpm. For "i7-3770k" It's showing 79c and 1-2% CPU usage. The position the cooler is in right now is pretty much how it's been seated since I first installed it, and I was getting those amazing temperatures.

Do you have any other suggestions? Is de-lidding to re-apply paste on the CPU a bad idea? Not sure what to do at this point.

I think it a bad idea(in this case).

Clearly something is wrong in the cooling system because the H100 Temp 1 of 72c seems like the fans should be screaming. The liquid temperature should be a good bit lower than the cpu temperature. Since the cold plate is seeing 70+, the heat spreader is in good enough contact with the cpu core

How fast is the pump spinning? If it is anything like the H80i, it should be about 2400rpm.

"H100i Pump" is showing 2177 rpm. If it matters, that's actually what I'm use to seeing it at, so it doesn't seem to be at a different rpm from my last 2 months of usage. hmmm...

Your pump is within the speed range for sure.

Is the air from the system very hot? I do not think I have seen cold plate temps over 45-50 under prime95 loads.

Can you check your cpu's voltage. The pump and fans both seem to be working(assuming the rad is pushing rather hot air).

This is with WoW running. It won't even clock up to my 4.5ghz anymore, I'm assuming because of the temperature.

The air blowing out the top doesn't feel as hot as it should. It barely feels warm. And the radiator itself only feels slightly warm.

Both programs are showing 1.192 V.

After troubleshooting this all last night, this seems to be the problem. I noticed that when I began tapping on the tubing and pump the temperature would actually drop, but as soon as I stopped it would rise again. I've already put in a ticket with Corsair and I'm hoping the RMA process isn't too painful. Thank you again for your help nukemaster, much appreciated.
