Hi all,
I have a netgear router WNR612.Can I connect my laptop to WD my book Live 2TB?

I mean to say
1) what if my internet is not working will I still be able to access NAS over wifi?

2)What if I unplug the LAN cable, will I still be able to use my NAS?

and does the transfer rate depend on my Internet connection speed or router capability?

Solution
If your in your house and your pc and Nas are on the home network then No as no information would cross thru the Internet. The key here is having a home network which means you have a router or router/modem combo that all your pc's, laptops, Nas's, etc .. connect to so they can get internet.

You should be able to access your WD My Book Live even if your Internet connection is out since it is part of your LAN (local area network). It must be connected to the router to access it over the network. The speed depends on your network and the slowest point would be the wireless connection of devices to the router.

I prefer NAS because of the reliability problems with USB connected external drives. The single most common question on the storage forum seems to be how to fix USB external drives that have become corrupted and now are not recognized or show up as RAW partitions, there seem to close to a dozen every day.

USB drives serve a purpose for extra storage, but many people rely on them for critical backups and they are not reliable enough for that. If you do go USB always use a safe eject and do not let the power to the external drive or computer just shut off during a write, in other words it is best to have them on a UPS.

What would you suggest in terms of a NAS solution for a home environment? I have both PC, Wintel laptops and Macbook and would like to be able to backup all of those. I am currently using a USB drive, but over the years the failure of USB drives and subsequent loss of data has begun to bite :)

The cheapest and simplest thing is to put a good quality HDD in one of your existing machines on the network that is on most of the time and make it a network shared drive.

If that is not possible or desirable, my next choice would be one of the newer small personal NAS devices like the WD Live drives that makes an Ethernet connection to the router. If you want more space and perhaps some redundancy a small consumer level NAS box with 3 or 4 2TB WD Red drives in RAID 5 would also work nicely.

Since you have mac's I would suggest something supporting timemachine

Both Synology and Qnap offer NAS's which support Mac's as well as probably being the best two Nas's makers on the market. They are not cheap by any means though.

something like a 2 bay nas which would give you some future expansion.

Also never rely on 1 drive/device to store your important files. All harddrives die and so the more backups you have the safer your data is
