[SOLVED] Windows 7 logon displays on integrated GPU instead of discrete GPU

I have a desktop with an Intel HD Graphics 4000 integrated GPU and a AMD Radeon HD 6850 discrete GPU. I only want to use the discrete GPU and not the integrated one. I already set IGP Multi-monitor to Disabled, and the Preferred GPU to PCI-Express in the BIOS. I also already uninstalled the Intel Graphics drivers, and installed the AMD Graphics drivers. Lucid Virtu MVP is also not installed.

The computer boots fine from POST until the Windows startup logo from the discrete GPU (monitor is connected to the discrete GPU via HDMI). But when reaching the Windows logon, the monitor gets a no signal error. And when I connect the HDMI cable to the motherboard port, the Windows logon is displayed on the monitor.

What should I do so that Windows uses the discrete GPU by default?

Actually it sort of works (boots to desktop using only the discrete GPU), if the AMD graphics drivers are also uninstalled. Upon installing the latest drivers from AMD and restarting, the problem occurs. So the PSU couldn't be faulty.

I might try to reinstall Windows to see if indeed it's a driver problem or not. Before that, I'll test the video card on another the PC to see if it still works.

Now this is weird, whenever I boot my PC from cold start, it continues to the logon screen while connected to the discrete GPU. And if I restart it, the monitor loses signal upon reaching the logon screen (right after the Windows logo).

I have an HD 6850 as well, and it has been turning off my PC randomly when I have 2 monitors connected. To be honest it has been giving me problems since I got it. I think the card might be going bad. It sounds like a GPU issue to me.

I can still game using the HD 6850 so I don't think it's going bad. The problem is that from a warm boot (from restart for example), the monitor gets a no signal error only on the logon screen. Before that, the BIOS POST or the Windows logo, it works as intended. Also from a cold boot (from shutdown), it also works correctly all the way to the desktop. Note also that I sometimes dual boot to Linux and I don't experience this problem there.

Solved it. Replaced the HDMI cable with a DVI adapter+VGA cable. And also apparently it's an HD 7850 (the card doesn't have stickers anymore and I didn't bother to verify the model). Anyway, it's really weird why 3D doesn't work reliably over HDMI or is it just this card?
