Just started having the same problem - external screen that used to work, doesn't anymore. It is detected and properly describ

Have you plugged the monitor into another system to make sure it works?
Have you checked to make sure that you didn't accidently deactivate it with the fn keys?

I use the monitor on a second linux system - it works fine. I used the 'select' display port on the screen to switch between the two systems (both Ubuntu 12.04). It was working for the last six months. The laptop is a macbook running the Ubuntu 12.04. It is a miniport -> displayport cable. I just can't select the display port anymore.
