The temperatures on my old intel core 2 quad Q8400 with have been high 80-90 C while gaming and 60C while idle. I was thinking of getting a Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO and coolermaster IC essential E2 thermal compound. any suggestions will be very helpful.

is your pc clean? has it always run that hot? what are your ambient (room) temps? does you pc have good airflow? is the cpu fan oriented (pushing or pulling) properly (like you flipped it by accident if you cleaned it before?) have you tried cleaning and reseating the stock cooler with new thermal compound and checked temps? are you overclocking?

It is a stock cpu, not overclocked. ambient temp is between 24-32 C. there was a rattling sound coming from one of the fans even after cleaning so i called a technician who turned out to be even more of a noob than I am. he pulled out the heat sink to check and when i asked him if he was going to replace the thermal paste, he didnt even know what that was!! the cpu works now but there is slight high pitched whine sometimes like the fans are spinning really high. so I checked out the forums here and then downloaded HWmonitor to see if the cpu is overheating and the readings are as I have described. the thing is I live in a very small town and any repairs mean either I have to drive down 120 miles to the nearest city or order the parts online and try to do it myself if its not too complicated. I have just ordered Artic silver thermal compound which everybody seems to say is the best so I will reapply and check the temps once it arrives. was just wondering if i should invest in a HYper 212 EVO as well and if it is easily compatible with my setup?

i wouldnt waste waste 30 dollars if it wasnt needed, from what you said odds are, if he put thermal paste back on he didnt clean it or put way too much in, or hell maybe none at all. double check you fan orientation (it should be pulling away from the cpu) and make sure its plugged into the cpu fan header

I have a 8200 and recently picked up one of the following, because the stock Intel heatsink if garbage (74C while transcoding is unacceptable). Granted, it ran fine at that temp for 5 years already, but still...

It's about $10 cheaper than the Coolermaster, yet it's a very high quality product. I was thoroughly impressed by it actually.

My idle temp is 32C and max load with Prime 95 was 52C on one of the cores, 43C on the other three cores. When transcoding with Handbrake it never breaks 45C though, so that's a real world example. Compared to 48C idle and 75C load on the stock HSF, the new one rocks. It's also very quiet.

Another nice thing about it is that it will fit most Intel and AMD sockets.

I live in a small town in India and calling a technician here is pretty much russian roulette. The only reason I even tried was to save a trip to my dealer about 100 miles away. some of these guys are pretty much hardware "terrorists " with toolsets. :fou: this guy probably screwed up more than he helped. looks like Im taking that 100 mile drive after all.

none of the dealers here carry this and and international orders carry a 100% customs charge making this a no go. I found a Coolermaster Hyper TX3 EVO for around 20$ at a dealer here. is it good?

As far as heat dissipation, it would certainly do the job. My only concern are the mounting plugs. You have to be very careful that they are fully jammed into their holes, else the whole thing could fall off. Silly Intel attachment design! Some people have posted warnings on newegg about that issue and I think it's valid, for those who aren't careful. It's one of the reasons I chose the Silverstone HSF.

That said, it will most certainly do the job when attached.

Sorry about suggesting a product you could not actually get, Kanak. Crazy Internet thing allowing people from all over the world to chat with each other lol.... :D

Ha ha ha:D. but its all good. A couple of dealers have told me they will try and get it. the thing is dealers here import and stock what they know will sell and coolermaster has been here in the market for a few years now. but if enough people ask for a new brand then they get a few pieces at least. capitalism at work i suppose. Im going to wait and see if i can get a silverstone HSF. if not I'll go with the TX3 EVO. the best part of the internet is that you are not stuck believing whatever BS the dealers tell you trying to unload unsold crap at fancy prices on unsuspecting customers! one guy was trying to get me to buy a whole new CPU/ MB combo telling me my existing one is damaged and beyond help!!

thanks every body for the feedback. I re applied artic silver ceramique 2 thermal paste and temps are all in the 40 C while idle and go only upto the 60 C while playing games. I have ordered a TX3 but if these temps stabilize I will save it for when I upgrade. the artic silver website says ceramique 2 has a 20 hour running in period for maximum effect. will wait and see.
