The cards are standard gaming GPUs. Odds are, AMD just felt like a change. It's good to shake up the model numbers every now and again, after all.
They would actually have been the 9000 series, even if they kept the old naming scheme. The 8000s were just rebrandings of the 7000s.

Yes, it's the next generation of gaming cards that follows on from the 7000 series. The reason it's not an 8000 series card is because they rebranded the 7000 series as 8000 series for the OEM manufacturers, as the OEM's want to look like they're progressing the hardware in their systems.

Yep. Rebranding is an odd thing.

The R9-290X is actually a breath of fresh air, in my opinion, in that it's a top-tier single-GPU card. It's pretty much AMD's answer to the Titan, with current benchmarks placing it around the same performance and price expected to be below $700.

Edit: Wikipedia's entry on the 8000 series indicates that a few of the mid-end desktop GPUs and the majority of the mobile GPUs were new. This conflicts with what I'd been told, but it's definitely possible that the mobile GPUs flew under my radar, as I don't track mobile gaming options.

Your kidding right? All of the R5, R7, R9 and 8000 are re-badge cards. And yes even the 290's, This is not a bad thing! I have no idea why this is always considered bad, Nvidia always re-badges there cards too, like the 760 being a 670 a 770 being a 680 and so on. This just means next year when you buy the same price range you get a better card. Nothing wrong with that. It takes awhile longer for a complete GPU redo. But GCN will eventually be replaced instead of re-badged. So will Kepler.
