I have an Asus PZ68 LX motherboard, with 12GB RAM DDR3 (4x3). It seems my system has taken one whole chip off for vram. How do I reallocate that RAM? I didn't spend that money on a chip so I could lose it to VRAM.
Operating system: Windows 8

Is your Windows 8 64 bit or 32 bit?
If it is 32Bit that may cause that. Windows 7 64 Home Premium works with 16GB ram.
32Bit works only with 4GB ram? If I remember correctly.
Windows 7 Professional/Ultimate enables you to use max 192GB memory.
But Im not sure how it goes with 8.

Edit. X86 / X64
Windows 8 Enterprise 4 GB / 512 GB
Windows 8 Professional 4 GB / 512 GB
Windows 8 4 GB / 128 GB
So it looks like you have one...

So it looks like you have one broken memory stick in your system.
Or you motherboard is not supporting more than 8GB memory?
Or maybe dual chanel memory system blocks one memory stick "away"
Try to look bios and make it work with manual settings.
Maybe best is add one more stick and use 16GB memory :) Then they work in dual chanel :)

That should work pretty well, I think. I'll try that, thank you.
