im going to be getting both a GPU and CPU eventually and have already been looking at the phenom series but they seem very expensive for older processors, my budget is below £100 at the moment but i can wait and upgrade when i can afford slightly more if i need to

They are expensive for older CPUs but they are effective for the money they ask. My suggestion. Buy the best phenom with the money you have right now (something like Phenom II X4 965 for £70 and an other 2x2GB RAM for £30), and after when AMD releases their new GPU and you can afford it, buy a R7 260X 2GB for around £100.

I don't think you will find a 95W Phenom x 4 for sale any more how about this http://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-ADX450WFGMBOX-Triple-Core-Processor-Warranty/dp/B003YV64OI/ref=sr_1_23?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1380241119&sr=1-23&keywords=am3 and a Radeon 7770 http://www.ebuyer.com/434588-msi-graphics-card-amd-radeon-hd-7770-1gb-dvi-hdmi-mini-displayport-r7770-pmd1gd5 jusy over budget but not much to save and the gpu may go down in price when next gen release or its replacement be better at the same price point.
