Should i get a better CPU or a better GPU first?

hi guys/girls, ive had this computer for quite a while now and its starting to get slow with gaming, i know its getting a bit old and was wondering if a new GPU or CPU would be better, im on a tight budget because got a new born baby.

MY specs are

CPU- AMD ATHLON 65 x2 dual core 5200+ 2.70GHz

GPU- AMD Radeon HD 6450 2gb

motherboard- ASROCK N68c-s ucc

PSU-950watt

GPU would be better. Something good would be bottlenecked by your CPU but you will see more of a benefit than running your 6450 on a better CPU.

Whats your budget for your GPU?

Your board will support Phenom II so I suggest you look for something like X4 965BE. You did not state a budget but even HD7750 would be massive GPU upgrade.

When you are saying that you are on a tight budget, what do you mean exaclty? $100? $150? $200?

im going to be getting both a GPU and CPU eventually and have already been looking at the phenom series but they seem very expensive for older processors, my budget is below £100 at the moment but i can wait and upgrade when i can afford slightly more if i need to

Even Athlon II X4 would be upgrade. But with your budget HD7770 GPU would fit.

They are expensive for older CPUs but they are effective for the money they ask. My suggestion. Buy the best phenom with the money you have right now (something like Phenom II X4 965 for £70 and an other 2x2GB RAM for £30), and after when AMD releases their new GPU and you can afford it, buy a R7 260X 2GB for around £100.

thanks for the help guys, whats the best phenom cpu to get? my motherboard can go upto a 95w 6 core, ill be using computer mostly for games and photo editing

Yep Athlon II X3 or X4 is a good upgrade since you are limited to 95watts.

Well this AMD Phenom II X6 1045T Six Core Processor costs £105, its 95w and its within range of your budget.

And about the GPU? Wait a bit, the new R7 260X 2GB will be better than 7790 with 2GB VRAM at around £100.

Personally I think £105 comes to close (within £20) to a FX6300 and a new board. Especially since overclocking would be limited when the chip already needs close to the max power the board is rated for.
