How do you build your PC without letting static ruin it?

Hi,
I am wanting to build my first PC and I am worried about static ruining it all and wrecking my first build. I have heard about anti-static wrist straps but I was wondering if there is any other tips or tricks I could use to ground the static. I have a laminate flooring which i can use to build on but that is it. I have asked a relative and he said that he can bring me a big sheet of metal home. If I build on that will that help in any way at all?
Thanks if you can help me

A metal sheet is not necessary.

I've built many hundreds of machines and never had a static issue, although I don't run around in wool socks on a silk rug or anything. Just be aware and touch the metal of the case or power supply before other parts and don't handle parts by the contacts. You can wear a wrist strap, although I never have felt it necessary.

A big no-no is having large glasses of liquid on the desk during the build, especially if you have anything powered up.

What if I'm building without a case, will touching the power supply box work?

There's always that.

But in all honesty I've built several PCs and never used a static wrist strap - I generally find them to be a complete waste of money since you're basically paying for a false sense of security. If you're going to have anything go wrong with any part of your build, it's going to be because of a poor production line on the manufacturer's end than your end.
