Not sure why all the Windows "experts" have to be such jerks and assume that people are pirating. I bought my computer over 4 years ago from a nationally known retailer. I never had a problem with Windows until the past few months. The first time I got this error message, I called Microsoft - got advice but it wasn't worthwhile. I reloaded Windows 7 successfully, I thought, but have started getting message again. Meanwhile, computer is very temperamental and very slow. When I tried to reload Windows 7 yet again, I received a message that the copy I was trying to download was older than what is currently on the computer. Yes, it is the disc for Windows 7. I assume the reference involves updates, so should I just go ahead and reload it?

Are you doing a repair install like THIS to save your programs and data or a clean install?

If you want to reinstall the latest image (SP-1U) either way, download the same version that you have from HERE and use your key to activate. There will still be quite a few Windows Updates to do though.

You can re-install Windows 7, but after the install you will have 3 days to activate it (unless is accepts your license and activates during installation). If you are having issues with activation, for whatever reason, you will have to call Microsoft to resolve the issue, they are the only ones that can resolve a license issue.

Most of the time when people are having license issues that can't be resolved by calling Microsoft, it's because they are pirating it. But i believe you, you shouldn't need to re-load windows, if you can use the activation dialogue to get an activation id from the automated microsoft system, that should work, but if it comes back, it probably means the place you bought the PC from somehow re-used the key and it's getting de-activated on your PC when it's seen on another. Then you'd need to call the place you bought it from.

You could try running this, it is a license validator but supposedly it can also try to repair (genuine) damaged license files.
I don't know if it'll actually help but it might be worth the try.

Thank you all for your responses. I tried hahawin's answer first, because it seemed easiest. Probably too early to really say it did the trick, but message was received that update was successful and everything's working well for now.
