Is there a way I can put my SSD in later?

I just checked youtube for SSD vs HDD boot time and holy craaaaaaaaaaap the difference is insane. My last parts are coming tomorrow and I don't want to wait next week just for an SSD ): I'd like to start using my PC as soon as possible.

So let's say I fully built and installed everything for my new PC. Can I get an SSD card later to make my boot time faster or do I have to have my SSD card during the computer build? Tomorrow my HDD will come but I haven't ordered an SSD yet

Solution

You can put it in later, but you should really reinstall the OS on the SSD when you get it.

Depending on what you want to use it for in the meantime...you could use a Linux LiveCD, and not actually install anything on the HDD.

Well you can always install to your HDD to get up and running. Most people (including myself) will say you should do a clean install on the SSD when you get it, but there's also the option to clone your HDD install over the your SSD. If you plan on doing that, make sure to shrink your system partition down to a size smaller or equal to the size of the SSD you're getting, otherwise it can be a pain to get over unless you're good with clonezilla.

Well, yes, of course you can. When you buy the SSD, you'll install it and install the OS. You'll keep your HDD as a storage drive, so you don't even have to back anything up. Once you have the OS running on your SSD, move over anything you want to keep, then you can format your HDD so you get all of your space back. Install games you want to play onto your SSD, and move music, movies etc. back to your HDD for storage.

Aaah god damnit there's always one thing I'm missing when ever I do something -.- I don't feel like doing all that work

I'll just stick to an HDD. I'll go take a piss while my computer is booting up or something.

For one afternoons worth of work (reinstall on the SSD), you'll be missing out in the long term.

A fresh Win 7 install onto an SSD takes less than 10 minutes, you should be able to load up a few programs that you need for a week and use the thing without doing a full blown setup, then do it when it comes.

I feel like I'm missing out on so much by not getting an SSD....

Ok let's say I go to best buy or some other place on saturday and get an SSD (I doubt I can finish my build tomorrow anyways), what do I download on the SSD? Actually first of all, can I get an SSD at best buy?

Yes, best buy stocks 2 or maybe 3 different models, in a couple capacities usually. They usually have intel drives, which are good, but expensive comparatively. The Best Buy pricing for them isn't usually far off from web pricing though (at least it wasn't when i got one there).

Well...my local BestBuy doesn't have any 'in stock'. Ship to store, yes.
But Amazon and Newegg do next day shipping. You can have it on Saturday.

What part of the country are you in? I figured if BB in Idaho stocked them pretty much everywhere would...

Eh I'm spending too much time thinking about this. I'll just keep my HDD.
Just googled something about a RAM drive so I'll use that to help certain things run faster.

thanks for the help though
